In today’s digital age, mobile devices are increasingly targeted by malicious actors seeking to steal sensitive information, monitor activities, and cause severe privacy breaches. One such spyware-type malware, known as Monokle, has recently come under scrutiny due to its advanced capabilities and alarming methods of installation. Below, we will explore what Monokle is, how it spreads, and what steps you can take to remove it from your device.

What Is Monokle Malware?

Monokle is a sophisticated spyware application targeting Android devices. It is capable of a wide range of malicious activities, such as:

  • Extracting extensive geolocation data
  • Recording phone calls and messages
  • Accessing files and sensitive information
  • Monitoring and controlling device functions

Monokle was discovered when a Russian programmer, previously detained by Russian authorities, returned a device that had been seized during his imprisonment. Upon using the device again, he noticed suspicious behavior, which ultimately led to the discovery of the malware. This indicates that Monokle is potentially used in geopolitical contexts, as the malware was reportedly installed during the programmer’s custody, possibly as part of an effort to spy on him.

How Monokle Infects Devices

Monokle does not rely on stealthy infiltration tactics like many other malware programs. Instead, it appears to have been directly installed on the target device. Upon its installation, Monokle masquerades as a legitimate application, in this case, Cube Call Recorder, a well-known app used for recording phone calls and VoIP calls. This trickery ensures that users are likely to approve its installation and grant the necessary permissions.

During installation, Monokle requests several permissions that enable its malicious functionality, including:

  • Access to precise location data
  • Access to contacts and communication logs
  • Permission to record phone calls
  • System and account information

While these permissions are in line with what a legitimate call recorder would ask for, Monokle goes much further. It requests additional permissions to:

  • Access even more detailed location data, including when the app isn’t in use
  • Record video and take photos, using the device’s cameras
  • Monitor SMS messages, including sending and reading them
  • Access and record keystrokes, potentially stealing passwords and other sensitive information
  • Install additional malicious content

Monokle also abuses Android’s Accessibility Services, which are designed to assist users with disabilities by enabling accessibility features like screen reading. This allows the malware to gain control over various device functions, such as simulating touchscreen actions and interacting with apps without the user’s consent.

The Second-Stage Infection

Once the malware has obtained these permissions, it proceeds to the second stage of the infection, where it hides its malicious activities to avoid detection. This stage significantly expands Monokle's capabilities:

  • Admin privileges are added to the device
  • Shell commands are executed
  • JavaScript injection takes place
  • Keylogging becomes active
  • Stored login credentials are exfiltrated
  • Messages from various messaging apps are read and exfiltrated
  • New malicious libraries are installed, including those for live-streaming audio and video

The threat posed by Monokle is particularly dangerous because of its ability to not only monitor but also actively control the infected device, potentially leading to severe privacy breaches, financial losses, and identity theft.

  • The scanning process may take some time, so be patient.

Step 3: Review and Remove Detected Threats

  • Once the scan is complete, SpyHunter will display a list of detected threats.
  • Carefully review the list and ensure that Monokle and any related malware are selected for removal.
  • Click on the Remove button to delete the threats from your device.

Step 4: Restart Your Device

  • After the malware is removed, restart your device to ensure all changes take effect and that no remnants of Monokle remain.

Step 5: Monitor for Suspicious Behavior

  • Continue to monitor your device for any signs of unusual activity, such as battery drain, slow performance, or unexpected changes to system settings.

Preventing Future Infections

While removing Monokle is essential, preventing future infections is even more critical. Here are some effective preventive measures:

  1. Install apps only from trusted sources: Stick to official app stores, such as the Google Play Store, and avoid downloading apps from unverified or third-party websites.
  2. Review app permissions carefully: Always check what permissions an app requests before installing it. Avoid granting unnecessary permissions that seem irrelevant to the app's primary functionality.
  3. Keep your device updated: Regularly update your device’s operating system and apps to patch any known vulnerabilities.
  4. Use a reliable mobile security app: Install a reputable mobile security solution like SpyHunter, Avast, or Bitdefender to detect and block potential threats before they can cause harm.
  5. Enable two-factor authentication (2FA): For added security, enable two-factor authentication on accounts that support it. This provides an extra layer of protection if your login credentials are compromised.
  6. Be cautious with links and attachments: Avoid clicking on suspicious links or opening email attachments from unknown sources, as they can lead to malware downloads.

Conclusion

Monokle is a highly sophisticated Android spyware that poses significant risks to privacy and security. If you believe your device may be infected, it's essential to act quickly by using trusted malware removal tools like SpyHunter. Additionally, by following best practices for app permissions, device security, and regular updates, you can minimize the risk of future infections.
