The Potentially Unwanted Program “Great Discover” Operates as a Cryptominer

Many individuals have attempted to get rich quickly as new digital currencies, including BitCoin, DogeCoin, and others, have burst into the financial lexicon with the rise of cryptocurrency. This phenomenon has also been noticed by criminals on the so-called “dark web” as the practice of cryptojacking, which is accessing a victim’s computer remotely to “mine” digital currency, has risen to prominence and is now a frequently-used cybercrime tactic.

We have covered adware and highlighted most of its annoying and potentially problematic features, including bombarding users with unwanted ads that can lead to questionable websites or unreliable products. But now, a program called Great Discover has combined the adware functionality with the ability to stealthily use a victim’s system for cryptocurrency mining.

Although this software has potentially harmful and annoying features, thankfully, it does not try to steal sensitive information, spy on you, or damage your files. But due to its ability to use your computer’s processor and graphics card to mine for cryptocurrency, the effects may greatly reduce the lifespan of your hardware. Great Discover may also cause performance issues while playing games or using other programs. Great Discover works similarly to other miners like Zenar Miner and the ‘wup.exe’ process. Thus, if you see via Task Manager that this process takes a lot of system resources, it is a sign that you might have a cryptocurrency miner installer.

How Do You Remove Great Discover?

You should scan for and remove Great Discover and elements associated with this program by leveraging the use of a reputable malware remediation program.
