"MAV Token Eligibility Check" Website: A Cryptocurrency Drainer Scam

Cryptocurrency scams have been on the rise, with sophisticated schemes targeting unsuspecting users. One such scheme is the fake “MAV Token Eligibility Check” website, which impersonates the legitimate Maverick Protocol (mav.xyz). This malicious operation promises eligible users rewards in the form of MAV or ZKsync (ZK) tokens but instead exposes their crypto wallets to a cryptocurrency drainer.

Overview of the "MAV Token Eligibility Check" Scam

  • Website Address: eligibility.maveclaim[.]xyz (other domains may also be used).
  • False Promise: Claims that users are eligible for MAV or ZKsync tokens.
  • Disguise: Masquerades as Maverick Protocol, a DeFi infrastructure provider.
  • Attack Methodology:
    • Victims are prompted to connect their crypto wallets to check "eligibility."
    • Once connected, malicious contracts are signed unknowingly by the victim.
    • These contracts enable the automatic draining of funds from the wallet.
  • Associated Damage: Monetary loss that is irreversible due to the nature of blockchain transactions.

The fraudulent site deploys a cryptocurrency drainer that can target high-value digital assets and steal them seamlessly. Detection tools such as Trustwave and VirusTotal have flagged the associated domain as suspicious and dangerous.

How the Scam Works

  1. Luring the Victim: The fraudulent site is promoted through compromised websites, rogue ads, and social media spam.
  2. Impersonating Maverick Protocol: Users are deceived into believing they are interacting with a trusted DeFi project.
  3. Wallet Connection: Victims are required to connect their wallets to check for token eligibility.
  4. Unauthorized Transactions: A malicious contract grants scammers access to the victim's wallet, enabling the automated theft of assets.

The scam’s operation is seamless, often leaving victims unaware until their funds are irretrievably lost.
